Too Busy to Help? So Were We—Until We Saw the Impact at BBBSKC

By Christy Rogers, Owner and Instructor at Training Umbrella

I almost said “No”. I didn’t think we’d have the time or capacity to do one more thing. But then I thought, “is that really true?” Don’t we make time for the things that are important?

Being named Most Wanted Honoree with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City (BBBSKC) has been a wonderful experience. It has given us the opportunity to interact with people in the community that really care and are making a difference in the lives of kids in my hometown. What does it mean to be an Honoree? We pledge to connect with our network to raise awareness and funds that go towards the programs and operations of BBBSKC.

At the time I am writing this article, there are currently 997 matches and 194 kids waiting for a Big. For those of you who like stats, here you go.

It takes approximately $1,500 to make a match. That takes one Little off the waiting list.

In the past five years, BBBSKC has placed about 500 Littles in jobs & internships and partnered with over 140 corporate, civic and community organizations to prepare Littles for the workforce.

Build-a-Biz Bash

One opportunity we had was to attend the Build-a-Biz Bash! It was an inaugural event where entrepreneurs and business leaders volunteered their time to guide Little’s through the process of building a business from scratch. This event allowed Little’s to practice networking skills and to learn how to think as an entrepreneur.

If you are a female professional in the Kansas City Community, I encourage you to learn more about EmpowHER. It is an annual giving circle focused on women professionals. Members have the chance to give, volunteer, and grow their impact with the agency through opportunities supporting our single moms and our Big and Little Sisters. The time commitment is Little but the impact is BIG! There are also opportunities to connect with other members and female leaders of the community.

Be sure to check out the EmpowHER Flyer or contact katie.lord@bbbskc.org to learn more.

Mahjong Fundraiser!

If you are curious about BBBSKC and want to help our fundraising campaign, there is still time to be a part of something BIG.

With the help of Lauren Sinovic from Kansas City Mahjong, we are hosting a Mahjong open play night on Tuesday, November 18 at Training Umbrella.

100% of the open play and raffle tickets benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of KC, helping us empower more young people in our community. To learn more about the event look here 🡪 Make a Match! In Tiles & Mentorship

If you can’t make the event but would like to make a one-time, tax-deductible gift, please visit our fundraising page:
